Bio

I am a junior classified as a senior at Purdue University who hates her major but it's too late to change now. I'm part of Convocations Voice Network, the student ushering group which means I get to see all the big concerts and shows on campus for free, and I wrote for the student paper, The Exponent, for 2.5 years. I both love and hate the publication depending on what day you ask me about it. Rock on, Purdue! Hopefully you'll become more liberal someday.

Purdue Achieves Milestones After Epic Win Over Rival IU

Purdue Achieves Milestones After Epic Win Over Rival IU

IU's embarrassing loss to Purdue with a final score of 62-10 this weekend was a nice enough ending to star quarterback Curtis Painter's four-year stretch at this Big Ten university. The final game of the year was also controversial coach Joe Tiller's last in his 12 seasons here with a grand total of 87 career wins for the Boilermakers.

Flowers in Ashtrays during The Great American Smoke Out

Flowers in Ashtrays during The Great American Smoke Out

Throughout campus Thursday, bright yellow artificial flowers were seen sticking out of ashtrays as part of The Great American Smoke Out. They were intended to inspire life instead of death by smoking. Regardless of your stance on the issue, the flowers brought a splash of color back to the dying Autumn campus.

Pappy's Sweet Shop Still Not Done With Redesign

Pappy's Sweet Shop Still Not Done With Redesign

It has been two months since Pappy's, the classic burger place in the Union that alumni always come back to, began their redesign but their new replacement for the famous wall menu has yet to arrive. One would think that they'd consider the logistics of shipping time beforehand so everything would be done at the same time.

Otherwise, the new a...

Student Paper Appoints New 2009 Editor In Chief

"Congratulations to Mikel Livingston, our editor-in-chief for 2009. about 4 hours ago from web"

The news advisor of the Exponent just posted on his Twitter that the new EIC of the paper, succeeding senior Andrea Thomas, will be junior Mikel Livingston. Livingston (whom I worked with back in the day) has been involved with the paper ever sinc...

40-Year-Old Physics Student Just Wants To Be Heard

40-Year-Old Physics Student Just Wants To Be Heard

It seems that once or twice a week (even during the slow summer months), the dedication "Mike Sloothaak, Purdue Staff" proceeds a letter to the editor in the Exponent. With the considerable number of letters that people send in to the paper each day (believe you me, I worked there for almost 2 years) that's not a particularly easy achievement. B...

Latest comment by Anonymous: I apologize for my letters to the editor, which amount to one or two per semester not per week. (I'm sure that just a typo on the essayist's part.) I understand I'm abusing my constitutional right

Compliment Guys Gets Their Very Own Feature

Compliment Guys Gets Their Very Own Feature

It looks like the Compliment Guys are not dead after all. Here they are featured in tomorrow's issue of the Exponent. A friend once told me they must be doing it for their intro sociology class where students have to do something out of the norm to test people's reactions. But awesomely enough, the article says they just does it for fun to brigh...

"Diversity" Makes its Annual Buzzword Appearance

Country Star, Blowfish to Replace OAR

Country Star, Blowfish to Replace OAR

Announced just hours ago was news that country singer Gary Allan and lead singer of Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker, will be performing on campus 8 p.m. Saturday Februrary 28 at Elliott Hall. Tickets are $30 for students, $35 for general public (WTFFFFF). Thank goodness the Student Concert Committee finally got an act to fill the empty sp...

Latest comment by Anonymous: Listen to either, and compare to other "country" artists, and you won't feel so marginalized. Both are talented artists who have been influenced by many genres, and tap into them for their shows.

Student Paper Unknowingly Perpetuates Race War

Student Paper Unknowingly Perpetuates Race War

In the midst of all the racial tension on campus recently, it's ironic that the Exponent has the above banner on his homepage. At least right now, refreshing the page to get rid of it is futile. Google Ads sure has a dark sense of humor.

On the news side of things, here are a few developments in all of this:

1. West Lafayette John Dennis has r...

The Battle of Bikers vs. Walkers Continues

The Battle of Bikers vs. Walkers Continues

A few weeks ago, Purdue made its first attempts to help calm the constant war between bikers and pedestrians by painting designated areas on sidewalks where respective parties should make their travels. Bikers have expressed anger and annoyance, however, that walkers still ignore the paths and fail to look both ways before crossing one.

Obviou...
