5 Reasons NOT to go Back to College This Fall

5 Reasons NOT to go Back to College This Fall
With most college students already one month into their summer breaks, thoughts of school are to say the least very comfortably out of mind. Even as some languish in summer classes, including yours truly, summer is still summer. Thank God for college's four-month-long summer breaks!

As we all settle into the bulk of our vacation, we can take a

7 Signs You're a Redneck

7 Signs You're a Redneck
Rednecks...so ubiquitous in popular culture, yet rarely do you actually see this strain of the human species in person.  That is, if you're from anywhere but the duuurty South.

Today, I was able to finally see a pack of this breed up close and personal and took the opportunity to systematically observe their features.  Here are my conclusions.

Duke Dining Continues to Suck

Duke Dining Continues to Suck
Earlier this year, it was announced that Sacramento, California, based Lemon Grass would be coming to the Duke Bryan Center.  This Pan Asian style restaurant promised to add some diversity to the dining on West Campus and was highly anticipated...until Dining Services recently announced the plans have been nixed.

First, there were the plans to

Banana Thumb...It's gonna be a thing.

Banana Thumb...It's gonna be a thing.
For this past week, I've had this blackish gunk under my right thumbnail.  From where?  Where was this residue coming from?  Such a mystery...

Then, today, I was eating a banana, when BHAM (Yes, I spell BHAM with an "H"), it hit me.  It was from digging my thumb into the peel of the bananas I've been eating at every meal as I hungrily attempted

R.I.P. Duke Employee

R.I.P. Duke Employee
A 63-year-old Duke employee died last Wednesday, May 14th, in a freak steam explosion at the Duke University Levine Science Research Center.

According to the Chronicle newspaper, "[Rayford] Cofer, a master steam fitter and employee in Duke's Facilities Management Department since 2001, was working in a mechanical room in the LSRC's basement whe

What do cavemen, breasts, and hair have in common?

What do cavemen, breasts, and hair have in common?
I was sitting on the john yesterday, when I started thinking...  When and why did the trend begin for men to have short hair and women to have longer hair?

I imagined this particular part of human history when human features were relatively well-developed, yet we did not have the capability to create tools.  In this time, men and women both l

And we trust these people with our safety when flying?!

And we trust these people with our safety when flying?!
May 11th, I'm boarding a small, seventy-person plane from Charlotte to New Bern, NC, to go to the Duke Marine Lab. The plane is powered by one propeller on each wing. A little uneasy, I reach in the front seat pocket and turn open the safety pamphlet to find the image above.

Yes, the genius who designed this pamphlet had an artist draw cartoons

Physics at the Marine Lab: Time for some major slackage...
So, I am officially back on Duke property.  I'm at the Duke Marine Lab, gearing up to take Physics 53...with all of the other Duke slackers.

It must be a yearly ritual now.  The students most terrified of forces, accelerations, circuits, and such flock to the Marine Lab to play on the beaches and occasionally calculate velocities.  Go us!

Duke vs. Northwestern? Dukies RULE.

Duke vs. Northwestern? Dukies RULE.
Today, I infiltrated the one school that Duke managed to beat in football this past season.  Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, has been a familiar place to me for several years, but now, I compare Duke to this prototypical Midwestern, highly-selective institution.

1.    Northwestern's professors are more de

1. Chicago the Triangle. Easily.
2. Fake sweet tea < real sweet tea.
3. 24-hour Burger King off campus = Chick-fil-A on campus. Barely.
4. Rematch for football this September!
