"Hypermiling" is the Word of the Year, is Less Cool than It Sounds

The Oxford Dictionary society of word people has proclaimed “hypermiling” as the word of the year, because yes, that award does in fact exist. So what’s it mean?

“Hypermiling” was coined in 2004 by Wayne Gerdes, who runs this web site. “Hypermiling” or “to hypermile” is to attempt to maximize gas mileage by making fuel-conserving adjustments to one’s car and one’s driving techniques. Rather than aiming for good mileage or even great mileage, hypermilers seek to push their gas tanks to the limit and achieve hypermileage, exceeding EPA ratings for miles per gallon.

Yeah this is totally my dad. At least now I have a word for it. So what other words were under consideration for high honor?

• moofer
• topless meeting
• toxic debt
• carrot mob
• ecohacking
• hockey mom
• link bait
• luchador
• rewilding
• tweet
• wardrobe (as a verb)

Topless meeting? I’m all about that. And "carrot mob" intrigues me as well, I’ve always wondered what vegetables did when they got tired of all the bad press. “Tweet” in obligatorily on there, but even as a professional blogger I’ll be damned if I yet have any clue as to what Twitter actually does.

Alright, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to go wardrobe my hockey mom with some moofer in preparation for her topless meeting.
