Baylor traditions back in full swing

The first week of classes piggybacked its way into our lives once again. From an almost record-breaking number of freshman unleashed on campus to the first football game, and consequently, the first football loss of the season, yes, Baylor is back in session.

Last week, to start the year off, Baylor Panhellenic, IFC and athletics produced the Baylor traditions rally. Fresh-faced freshman came, donned their Baylor Line Jerseys and signed their slime caps all while mingling with sorority sisters and fraternity brothers. The rally began with a spirit talk by several coaches littered with phrases like “we’ll kick their butts” because in a public setting, we can’t say “asses,” as the cheerleaders swayed, shimmied and shook their pom-poms. Oh, and the ubiquitous Dr. Pepper was served.

Thursday night was the football game, which surpassed critics’ expectations – the Bears lost by more than 18 points. Though the Baylor Line was in full force with upward of 3,400 class of 2012ers running, I chose to watch the game from the comfort of my own home, while desperately trying to get ahead in my classes in order to look good for my professors.

But as Friday trotted along, class sizes seemed smaller than Wednesday’s, especially my last class. The first three-day weekend of the year ended the first week back at Baylor on a happy note. Happy fall 2008. Sic ‘Em Bears.
