It's impossible to tell how many potential drunken disasters the Off Campus College Transport (Aka those big blue buses trolling about campus) have thwarted since the not-for-profit company started in 1984, but come October 10, we may be bidding farewell.
I’m not going to get into detail about all the technical financial shenanigans that are the root of this debacle (I am, after all, only an English major), however, what I can tell you is that it has to do with someone failing to file some tax exemption, like 20 years ago. In words other words that the rest of you English majors can understand, the OCCT is in $40,000 debt.
It will truly be a shame, should this service really be taken away from the good students of Binghamton. I think we can all agree that the OCCT has saved us many a time, especially freshman year when we were stranded on campus without a car. For the rest of you, not fortunate enough to have a car on campus, then the buses still remain to be your saving grace. Whether it be an emergency trip to Wal-Mart, or a Midnight bus to the bars, the OCCT has carried us, as a community, both literally and figuratively. I’m confident that I can say, speaking for everyone here at Bing, that taking away our free ride is doing a massive disservice to the greater student body.
