Silber unloads on Frank Gehry's work at MIT, labeling it "trash," and isn't too fond of a lot of the crap that has been dumped on BU's campus as trial runs for making something pretty at Harvard. Presumably this includes the School of Law, which looks like a giant prop deemed too ugly for Blade Runner.
What is he a big fan of? Well, for one, the $30 million administrative office building which incorporated his offices way back in the dark ages when he ran things.
His response to the criticism that he had built himself a ****ing penthouse to work in:
"Yale and Harvard have beautiful facilities for their presidents, and for their alumni. It's fine for them to have lovely premises, but BU better not aspire to anything excellent? That's a slur on the university that I refuse to accept."He has a point, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Before BU aspires to excellence, how about we aspire to pretty-goodness? And before we try to build a dorm modeled on Gaudi, how about repairing the brownstones and rebuilding some of those alumni-relations bridges that John Silber burnt?
Yeah, take that, Silber! A pun! You want some of this, old man? Any time, any place. Well, any well lit place. You have a look of desperation in your eyes that suggests that the next little thing might set you off.

Stumble It

And oh yes, those terrible 'dark ages' when Silber ran things...and BU rose from being a provincial backwater to being a national university. Terrible days indeed. Posted 11/06/2007 9:21 PMReply
