Because Who Knows More About Ugly Buildings Than BU
Well, former BU supreme commander John Silber has a new book out, and guess what he's angry about? No, not the gays. Not heathen college students who can't stop ****ing long enough to read the complete works of Kant. The subject that has Silber especially wrinkly: ugly buildings!

Silber unloads on Frank Gehry's work at MIT, labeling it "trash," and isn't too fond of a lot of the crap that has been dumped on BU's campus as trial runs for making something pretty at Harvard. Presumably this includes the School of Law, which looks like a giant prop deemed too ugly for Blade Runner.

What is he a big fan of? Well, for one, the $30 million administrative office building which incorporated his offices way back in the dark ages when he ran things.

His response to the criticism that he had built himself a ****ing penthouse to work in:
"Yale and Harvard have beautiful facilities for their presidents, and for their alumni. It's fine for them to have lovely premises, but BU better not aspire to anything excellent? That's a slur on the university that I refuse to accept."
He has a point, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Before BU aspires to excellence, how about we aspire to pretty-goodness? And before we try to build a dorm modeled on Gaudi, how about repairing the brownstones and rebuilding some of those alumni-relations bridges that John Silber burnt?

Yeah, take that, Silber! A pun! You want some of this, old man? Any time, any place. Well, any well lit place. You have a look of desperation in your eyes that suggests that the next little thing might set you off.

Wow -- that might be the most ill-informed commentary on Silber I've ever read. The ugly Law School Tower -- do you think Silber built that? It went up 10 years before he got to BU; Silber's often said he hates it. You think Silber should be repairing brownstones on Bay State? What do you think he was doing for the past 30 years? Hell, who do you think bought those brownstones?

And oh yes, those terrible 'dark ages' when Silber ran things...and BU rose from being a provincial backwater to being a national university. Terrible days indeed.

For the record, I like Silber. I think the dislike of him, largely dying down as the years go on and incoming classes have no memory of him, is largely overblown. I also didn't say that he built or oversaw the construction of the Law building. Just that it's ugly. Which it is. But, the low alumni giving rate is totally unconnected to some of his actions and more controversial remarks, either. So, was he good for BU? Yes. Was he also bad for BU? Yes.

That being said, please see below:
