Brown Has Amazing Artists? Who Knew?

Brown Has Amazing Artists? Who Knew?

If you missed the free wine at last night's opening reception for Pixilerations, you can make up for your loser status by visiting the two galleries before 8 PM then stopping by Club PIXIL tonight at 10 PM.  Held at tazza cafe at 250 Westminster Street, Club PIXIL features DJ innovation and experimental electronics.

The Sol Koffler Gallery at 169 Weybosset is bright and spacious.  My top picks are Erik Conrad's piece, "Reading A Wave," which is freaking beautiful to stare at, but rather impossible to read.  With the materials list including "overhead projector" and "ripple tank," what's not to love about this simply brilliant display?  The text appears like waves in constant motion, and I don't even care if I was unable to read the story the whole way through.

Christobel Mendoza's "Missed Connections" sculpture was interesting, but I think version 2.0 will have to incorporate interesting words in the blanks.  It was quite fun to watch people as they figured out how the exhibit worked, so it's an excellent people watching opportunity.  By now, you've surely figured out that part of the fun of any art exhibit is watching the crowds, right?

By far the most outstanding piece in Sol Koffler is Heidi Kumai's Correspondence (from the "Time Release" series).  The piece features two video projections: one on a tiny envelope inside a bell jar and the other a stage behind.  The two videos seem to interact with other, and it's quite fascinating to watch.

Good luck getting to check out the DVD analyzer!  We stood around for 5 minutes hoping for a chance to interact with it, with no luck.  My friend, a gorgeous blonde, tried to convince the cop on duty to clear the line for her, but he refused: clearly, he's unflappable, since men never say no to Ana.

The exhibit has work by people from all over, including Brown and RISD students who are local, and MIT, which is close but no cigar.  The wine's all gone, but the art is still fabulous, I promise.
