I sincerely doubt that there are a lot of restaurants in Providence owned by skateboarding ex-professional paintball players. Julian's on the West Side (the west side is the best side, booyah!) is home to such an owner. (In fact, he's in the picture above, the guy furthest on the left, kicking it cas' in the green chair.) With funky art on the walls, cute college hipsters lining the bar, and the coolest damn bathroom you'll find in this city (yes, I said bathroom), Julian's is kind of a hidden gem in Providence, which is why there's a good chance you haven't heard of it. And if you have? Congratulations, you're cooler than you look.
Julian's full menu is available online, but the chalkboard o' specials changes daily based on what's in season and what's fresh. Julian's uses locally sourced fruits and vegetables, lots of organic ingredients, and offers a freaking fantastic assortment of vegetarian grub, you know, for when you're sick of the falafel at East Side Pockets. And I did mention the bar, right? You've got local favorites on tap, and an ever changing assortment of bottles -- like Sam Adams' Cherry Wheat. Yum!
With the outdoor seating in the patio style front, the electric pony rides (yes, I said pony rides), and advertisements for all the cool events going on around the city, Julian's is worth the trek off-campus, believe me. Catch bus number 27 or 28 at Kennedy plaza and look for the cool kids hanging out on the street (the neon glowing J will help, too). Or, walk your lazy ass down the hill, across the canal and the whole way up Broadway -- earn that dinner.
All this talk about food making you hungry? Me, too! Julian's also has the best dang breakfast in town -- I recommend the "Desperado" -- Eggs benedict with avocado and tomato slices served with home fries and Julian's own homemade ketchup. OMG.
