....there's always the option for Obama and McCain to find livelihood in DJing. DJ B-Rock and DJ McMutiny, anyone?

Blender magazine got the presidential candidates to name their top 10 songs. Some were humorous, but a few were so cliche that I cringed upon reading them. I wonder if the candidates channeled their inner hipsters in picking songs that are so unironic that they are ironic, and so ironic because of the unirony they're not again.

Obama's song list feelings like a description of what he wants his campaign and projected presidency to be like. "Ready or Not" by the Fugees is a great song of declaration, as is Kanye's "Touch the Sky" and Springsteen's "I'm On Fire". Some may find his love for Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On" inspiring, but I call it tacky.

On the other hand, McCain sounds like he'd be fun to have at parties, "Good Vibrations" and two ABBA songs on the list seems to indicate he likes to let his hair down and have a good time (we already know from his "Barbara Ann" improv that he enjoys Beach Boys). But of course he needs an obligatory cheesy, too-much-love song to melt the hearts of the less cynical readers as well, and he picked "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong, which, to me, is a less eye-roll-inducing choice than the one Obama selected.

Sillyness aside, this entertainment variety campaigning can be a double-edged sword like any other clever tactic. Voters who are exposed to too much of this kind of trivial information may end up casting their valuable vote for the man they'd like more as their pal than their commander in chief.
