ESPN is reporting that Clemson University has fired football coach Tommy Bowden today, and assistant head coach/wide receivers coach Dabo Swinney will be the team's new interim coach.
The axe fell for Bowden after the Tigers lost to Wake Forest, bringing their record to an unimpressive 3-3. The losses are particularly depressing considering Clemson was ranked No. 9 in the AP’s preaseason Top 25 poll and were even favored to win their first ACC championship during Bowden’s reign.
Now Bowden, son of FSU’s coach Bobby Bowden, is out and it doesn’t sound like people are all that upset about it. The couch told his assistant coaches about the firing this morning and the news spread from there. ESPN has the reactions:
Clemson center Thomas Austin was "caught off guard" by Bowden's firing.
"You hear rumors, but I've heard that before, so I'm definitely surprised," Austin said. "We were definitely struggling. I think that this could hopefully unify our team in the long run. We've got six games left and definitely have the ability to turn things around."
"They just told us. It's what he deserved," said senior quarterback Cullen Harper, who was benched after the Tigers' loss to Wake Forest loss and replaced by highly regarded sophomore Willy Korn. "Dabo Swinney is a fine man and will do an excellent job."
See that right there? Bowden was just owned.
