College Roadtrip: Blacktop, Oil, Cows & Texas
Their curiosity caused them to gather around us.We couldn't get enough of them, or they, us.Oil Rig Exhibit One. They dotted the landscape.Santa Fe sunset. Enough said. The best color palette.
Today was a day of intense driving across the flat and bushy plains of Texas and through the oil-rig-peppered fields of New Mexico. The blacktop, split with a hazy double line of yellow, stretched in front of us for more miles than we count, undulating over the waves of parched earth.  Tired of our music after more than 3,000 miles, we rolled down the windows and let the dry wind consume us.

With our impending departure from cow country, I begged A to stop along the road for a little steer and heifer chase. Despite horns and gruff looking faces, the cows, even the males, were more afraid of us than we expected. Only one female stayed to check us out. Bent on getting more photos, we followed the cows deeper into the field to delightfully find an entire herd of them. Finished snapping several dozen photos, we hopped into the truck and started to drive away, only to look behind us and see the cows following us all together after the truck. Mooing and grunting all the way to the road, A and I confirmed that never before had we had quite a sending off.

However, with cows as our only entertainment and oil rigs the only scenery, the day dragged on and we worried that Santa Fe would disappointed us. How mistaken we were! Dressed in Adobe style, and complete with cute boutiques, coffee shops, and southwestern style restaurants, A and I rated Santa Fe as one of our favorite tourist cities.

Now, fully stuffed after a delicious flatbread style pizza at the Rooftop Restaurant and Starbucks coffee (we just needed the internet), we are heading into the foothills of mountains for a colder night of camping and hopefully sleep.
