Final thoughts?
Let me start out by saying that I loved, loved, loved the show. It was a funny, heartfelt and relatable chronicle of the relationships of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. When I heard that a movie version was coming out, I honestly had doubts. Sure, I was excited about its premiere but since the show was already perfect as it was, I wondered what the producers could do to make it even better. I was not sure how its transition onto the big screen would fare. This weekend, I got my answer.
To be blunt, I did not like the movie. It lacked the comedy, wit and sexiness that the show and its lovely characters possessed. I understand that the movie takes place four years later and the producers wanted to present to us characters that have changed and matured but something was lost in translation.
The characters were out of character and too much time and effort was spent wreaking havoc on their lives and relationships. The show ended on such a high note. Why did they have to ruin all that? To prove that love conquers all? To show that these women have a vulnerable side? Whatever the reason was, it did not work. In my opinion, they ruined the integrity of the show and for no good reason at all.
Some things are better left alone and Sex and the City: The Show is one of them. Although it was number one at the box office, I have a feeling that the movie will soon be forgotten. I know I’d like to forget what I saw this weekend. The show ended four years ago and it is still so influential. They say that if it’s not broken, don’t fix it. Well, the show was flawless. They shouldn't have touched it.

Stumble It

scenes were so emotionally powerful, I was amazed. I think the characters were more reflective and forward-looking than they were in the series and that, as in real-life, comes with maturity. I did not want to see the girls become a cliche by appearing in the movie the way they were at the end of the series - like they were stuck in time and had learned nothing over the intervening years. Sorry, I have to agree with "aquamarine"! I'm really not sure what I expected to see. I did love the series so much and continue to watch the reruns. I really did not enjoy the movie. The girls were great, looked beautiful, & showed us all how wonderful and fun turning 50 is!!! I wish they had just done another year or 2 of the series instead. Posted 06/02/2008 11:43 AMReply
There were definitely some fun scenes and great moments in the film. I did enjoy the fact that the ladies had grown over the years and I thought SJP's acting had improved, BUT...
Steve cheats on Miranda and she forgives him. Big leaves Carrie on the wedding day and she forgives him (with the suggestion that somehow Miranda's comment contributed to his decision). SERIOUSLY?!? What happened to the strong, independent women we knew and loved on the show? I'm all in favor of forgiving things that are forgivable, but please!!! Posted 06/02/2008 6:41 PMReply
And I absolutely have to disagree with the comment Aquamarine said, saying tht the message seems to be that these women are suddenly nothing without men in their lives - how untrue! Take the whole Samantha storyline, she wanted her independence, she wanted to purchase the ring on her own terms so she wouldn't have to see Smith everytime she looked at it. She wanted the woman she was ten years ago back - by asserting her independence, she proved she doesn't ever need a man.
Carrie and Big belong together, that's clearly evident. How would you feel after being jilted like she was?
And we all know Charlotte and her love about true love. She can most certainly carry her own without a man, but she fell in love again.
And Miranda - Steve mad a mistake, plain and simple. People are human, people make mistakes. And he told her what happened. She struggled for six months about what she should do.
All of these elements WERE part of the show - with Samantha not believing in monogamy, Carrie going back to Big NUMEROUS times. All of these things were factors in the show.
The movie, while yes, of course could have been improved upon, was worth seeing, and provided closure to those who have been faithful watchers of the show. Posted 06/02/2008 8:06 PMReply
Steve did make a mistake. I agree with the way Miranda handled it. Like Anonymous said, some things are unforgivable and cheating is one of them. Just because he was honest with her does not justify his behavior. He violated her trust and should suffer the consequences. And while she strugged about what to do for six months, she ultimately went back to him because her friends told her to. That is far from being independent.
Charlotte was just over the top. She is supposed to be one of the main characters but her role in the movie was pointless.
The show ended with Samantha settling into a monogamous relationship. That was probably the ultimate sign of her maturity but it didn't mean the end of her independence. She exercised her independence by making the decision to move to LA with Smith and be his manager. Unfortunately however, she couldn't handle the job any longer and eventually left him. She was more selfish than anything and left without trying to make the relationship work. Samantha was always my favorite character but her role here showed that she couldn't handle the ups and downs of a real romantic relationship. By leaving, she didn't exercise her independence. Rather, she ran away at the sign that things weren't going her way. I don't see that as being mature or independent - just selfish and insecure. Posted 06/02/2008 9:40 PMReply
Miranda should have forgiven Steve for goodness sakes it had been 6 months!!!! Who does that?
I do agree that Charlotte's role was pointless but all in all I loved it! Posted 06/03/2008 5:23 PMReply
