Don’t Believe, Know It Sucks
Final Thoughts: The first X-Files movie opened in 1998 and raked in an impressive $189 million at the worldwide box-office.
Given its success, why did the show’s creators wait ten years to make another one?
The X-Files may still have its share of loyal zealots who turn out at yearly comic-cons dressed in Fox Mulder and Dana Scully outfits, but it’s hardly relevant anymore.
Watching the new film, it’s readily apparent that I Want to Believe is a relic of the past that’s wholly out of place in an age with films like The Dark Knight and Wall-E.
David Duchovny is a terrible actor, and Hollywood agrees, because he hasn’t had substantial work since the series ended (except some terrible Showtime series). Blame his alma mater, Princeton, for his lackluster performance in this one and throughout his career.
Should've gone to Columbia, David!
Gillian Anderson, however, offends far less than her dull co-star. In fact, she’s downright entertaining. Thanks to her formal theater training at DePaul University, Anderson offers up a far more engaging performance, besting the aging Ivy Leaguer on almost all counts.
If you’re going to trek out to the cinemas this weekend to watch The X-Files, go in with tempered expectations. Don’t let the “ten years in the making” hype ruin get to you.
