5 Types of Users You Will Meet on Facebook

If you're like me you remember the good ol' days of Facebook when it was a social network for college students and only college students. Those days are long gone as Zuckerberg and Co. opened the gates to anyone and built up one of the largest social networks on the internet. With the influx of Facebook users over the years, you've no doubt run into (or become) one of the following types of users.

The Stalker

One of the most well-known archetypes of Facebook user, the Stalker is many things; friend, foe, or even your significant other. He or she prowls the annals of Facebook checking statuses, obsessing over recent photos, wall posts, and changes made to your profile. To a Facebook Stalker nothing is more interesting than a change to your relationship status. In real life, he or she will make reference to things from your personal life he or she was not present for but, nonetheless, stumbled across during their stalking sessions.

How to spot a Stalker: A Stalker might reveal themselves in real life as they make reference to events for which he or she was not present. They might make remarks like “So I heard you and so-and-so broke up” or “So you attended Obama's speech online? I did too

The Model

This Facebook user is easy to spot as he or she will have a staggering amount of photos on their profile. Female users will, no doubt, have an astonishing number of self-portraits in which they look slightly upward and squish their lips together. Regardless of gender, Model users will be tagged (most likely by themselves) in countless albums. Look for page after page of photos from parties which include pictures of Model users with other Model users.

A Model's photos are likely to include, but are not limited to, any of the following:
Self-portraits trying to appear aloof
Self-portraits in color AND black & white
Glamour shots from a professional photographer

The Refresher

Like many of us, the Internet can take up a lot of our time. Many a wasted night is spent looking at Facebook without actually doing much. There are some Facebook users, however, who fall privy to this cycle all too often. The Refresher is a very bored individual who checks Facebook constantly to see if there are any updates to his or her Friend Feed. The refresh button on their browser is their most commonly used tool as they spend hours at night checking and re-checking Facebook to see what other, more interesting, people are up to.

The Awkward Relative

Most likely, all of you have come across this type of Facebook user since the network opened up to everyone a few years ago. The Awkward Relative is exactly what it sounds like- that aunt or uncle who signed up for Facebook and sent you a friend request. The only other friends they have are two of your cousins and if they've figured out how to upload photos they have already included some embarrassing pictures from a family reunion. They don't quite get the purpose of Facebook but at least they are trying. Their Facebook status often reads something like “Uncle Pete is : on Facebook”

The Glutton

The Glutton is the most prolific of all Facebook users. He or she will download every app sending you countless requests to be a vampire, take a movie quiz, find out which A-Team member you are, play Scrabble, accept a bumper sticker, have a cocktail, make Pieces of Flair, and so on. He or she is always updating their status, adding photos, posting on people's walls, and comments on everyone's status. If Facebook sends you email notifications, your inbox is flooded with mail because of activity from a Glutton user. If there is a party, he or she is the first person to post photos of it. If there is an upcoming event your invitation will definitely be from them. When it comes to Facebook they just want more. Being friends with a Glutton can be very annoying but, at least, puts your life into perspective so you can be thankful you don't care as much about Facebook as he or she does.

As the social network grows there will, of course, be even more types of Facebook users. It would be impossible to try and identify all of them. Some people might even be a combination of the ones mentioned here. Others might break free from the pack and become a whole new breed of Facebook user.
