8. Scarface (1983)
Alright,so a lot of people would think this movie would be No. 1 or 2. It does have an extremely devoted following, and one of the most quotable lines ever (If you don’t know the line you’ve been living in a hole since 1983). Honestly though, the movie is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lot of fun, but if you look a little farther than “Scarface” you’ll find much better gangster flicks. I must pay respect to “Scarface” though, because all I got in this world are my balls and my word and I don’t break them for nobody.

7. Millers Crossing (1990)
This movie has a lot going for it. It’s the only real gangster movie the Cohen brothers made, (although a lot of their movies do deal with crime) so you probably have an idea of how amazing the script and directing is. After all the Cohen brothers did sweep the Oscars this year. However, this movie has the most bold and insane scene I have ever seen in my life. Just make sure you’re paying attention when the old man is listening to “Danny Boy”.

6. The Godfather Part 2 (1974)
Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Francis Ford Coppola, what more do I have to say?Honestly this movie is probably just as good as the first one. Robert Duvall!

5. The Departed (2006)
Who expected Leonardo Dicaprio to come back and not be a joke? That was surprising to me. So this movie had just about the perfect cast, some awesome violence and really good writing. As far as gangster movies go, this is the closest I’ve seen to a recreation of a “Godfather” type success. And it has never been so cool to be Irish and from Boston.Damn the theme is catchy.

4. City Of God (2002)
Have you ever thought there could be a world where people kill each other like its no big deal? Then welcome to Rio De Janeiro in the 70’s. I remember this movie being a pretty big deal when it came out. I always heard about how beautiful it was so I never really wanted to see it, probably because I assumed it wouldn’t be violent enough, but I would have been dead wrong. This movie is outlandish in the way that people kill each other so easily and with such a nonchalant attitude. Apart from being an extremely violent movie about drugs in the slums of Rio,it is also one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. Obviously, you have to see it.

3. Pulp Fiction (1994)
This one has a lot to offer. The movie is separated into 3 basic vignettes. Each story has a different plot, but the characters and violent gangster under world are the same in all three stories. This movie is Quentin Tarantino’s claim to fame, and probably his best movie. It is also the reason why Samuel L. Jackson is famous, and is responsible for his reputation. I have always been of the opinion that Roger Avery deserved a LOT more credit for the writing of this movie than he ever got, but regardless, the movie is still amazing.

2. The Godfather (1972)
This movie may or may not be better than the second one. Just figure it out for yourself.

1. Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Yes,I am saying that this movie is better than the godfather. I’m surprised more people haven’t seen it, it’s truly a work of art. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it’s got violence and all that stuff, but this movie is really something special. For some reason I am reminded of the Italian painter Caravaggio when I see this movie. Based on four Jewish friends growing up in Brooklyn near the turn of the century and prohibition, the movie shines a very human and down-to-earth light on gangsters. If “The Godfather” is the perfect gangster movie, then “Once Upon a Time In America” is the most realistic and flawed gangster movie. Starring James Woods and Robert De Niro, I would recommend this movie above all others mentioned.
