I vaguely recall seeing this drifting around my newsfeed for awhile now, but I really had no idea that so many Facebook users were into this whole “Fan” thing. It’s weird because you would think it’s an application, but no, it’s actually done by Facebook. What’s even more strange? Who has the most fans. Has anyone every actually stopped to look at this list?
10. Donkey – 494,348 fans
Yes, like from Shrek. I mean, everyone likes the original Shrek a little bit, a few chuckled during 2, and 3 was horrendous. But somewhere along the way, the Eddie Murphy-voiced Donkey gathered 494,000 fans that liked him SO much, they put it specifically on their Facebook pages for the world to see. This deserves a big ‘ol WTF??
9. *Heath Ledger* – 522,831 fans
Alright now this one makes a little bit more sense, I imagine this number increased by at least 5,000 percent after he died, but at least he’s an actual celebrity and a good actor to boot. Frankly, I’m surprised the Joker isn’t in the top ten though. Side note: What’s up with the asterisks? I didn’t add those, that’s how it’s formatted. Do they represent the stars twinkling up in heaven or something? Weird.
8. W.Smith – 526,706 fans
Another strange formatting issue, why W? Why no space? It’s like the people are fans of Will Smith’s computer login ID or something. But again, at least this spot makes sense because there is literally no one on earth who doesn’t like Will Smith. This has been proven true because every single one of his movies makes bank whether or not it sucks (looking at you, I Am Legend / Hancock / I Robot).
7. Scrat – 536,543 fans
OK, come on, what the hell? The little squirrel with the acorn from Ice Age? Yes, he was slightly charming, but he made that much of impression on 500,000 people? I’m half expecting to see “Boo” from Monsters Inc. on this list. Oh wait, she’s #15. Seriously.
6. The Chris Moyles Show – 540,029 fans
I almost skipped this one because A) a show shouldn’t be on the celebrity list and B) I’ve never once heard of this, and I actually watch some stuff on the BBC. Anyways, Wikipedia research reveals that Moyles is a Englsih radio host (well that explains why I haven’t seen him on the BBC) and apparently 540,000 people like his show. I’ll be sure to tune in next time I’m in the UK.
5. The Stig – 579,022 fans
Ah, now this is what I’m talking about. I’m guessing most of you don’t know who The Stig is, but it turns out my BBC viewing IS good for something. The Stig is the nameless, faceless F1 driver from Top Gear. He’s never spoken once on the show, but he’s beloved in Britain and the world over.
4. Mr. Bean – 579,086 fans
So the English really like this "fans" feature huh? Well, Mr. Bean is fairly hilarious, so I guess a spot is deserved, but really, #4?. Note that he only beat out the Stig by a mere 64 fans out of over 500,000. Somone over at Top Gear needs to send out an inter office e-mail if they want to crack the top four. Oh wait, there’s a separate Mr. Bean fan account named “MR.Bean” with 360,954 more fans? Nevermind.
3. Homer J Simpson – 586,840 fans
Interestingly, one “Homero Simpson” clocks in at #24, with 290K of his own fans, surely capitalizing on the huge Latino following of The Simpsons. It’s no surprise to see Homer all the way up here, beating out other animated favorites such as Peter Griffin (#13) and his own son Bart (#19). But that leaves me wondering, where’s Eric Cartman?
2. Adam Sandler – 731,731 fans
Um, what? Was this fan application developed in 1998? Seriously, how is Adam Sandler #2? He must have personally organized some “get out the vote” drive to land himself a spot this high up. I mean, yeah, I loved Happy Gilmore and even cracked a smile during 50 First Dates, but seriously, Adam Sandler? I had no idea 731,000 sixth grade boys even used Facebook.
1. Michael Phelps – 1,619,052 fans
He’s Michael Phelps, what did you expect? I was pulling for either “David Beckham” or “Jesus Christ” to take the top spot, but alas, it’s the universe's favorite Olympian. Not only that, but he has double Sandler’s votes. Did something maybe happen this summer that would’ve caused such a surge?
Other Honorable but WTF Mentions:
(#11) Where’s Wally – I’m sorry, did you mean “Waldo”?
(#12) Sid – Yes, from Ice Age. What is it with that movie?
(#24) Ace Ventura & Jim Carrey – Why didn’t they just throw the Riddler and The Grinch in there too?
(#26) Gingy – More Shrek nonsense
(#29) Chucky – Like, the psychopathic doll. I don’t even know what to say.
(#37) Criss Angel – Sigh.
