Recently Britney Spears has been back in the news and for (sort of) the right reasons. Last night her documentary Britney: For the Record premiered on MTV and tomorrow her new album, Circus, drops.
With these accomplishments and an improving image, Britney is on the way to a comeback, people say. Look she’s staying out of trouble, they exclaim. She’s not flashing her crotch and shaving her head, they cheer. She’s almost back to her old self, they announce.
To those people, I say, have you listened to her? Here are a few choice sound bites from the documentary, care of People magazine:
“Even when you go to jail, y’know, there’s the time when you’re gonna get out. But in this situation it’s never ending. It’s just like Groundhog Day.”
“If I wasn’t under the restraints that I’m under now, I’d feel so liberated. When I tell them the way I feel, it’s like they hear me, but they’re really not listening.”
“I think I’ve learned my lesson now, and enough is enough.”
This doesn’t really sound like someone who’s happy. It sounds like one controlling force in her life (Sam Lufti, anyone?) has simply been replaced with another (Daddy dearest). Now at least Jamie Spears is a good influence, but it doesn’t change the fact that Britney is simply a puppet in her own life. It’s just sad.
Perhaps if her CD is a success and touring goes well, Britney’s life will turn around. But maybe what the girl really needs is a serious break from public life. At this point, all I can say is, best of luck Brit Brit.
