The Cleveland Browns lost to the Washington Redskins yesterday, a week after surprising the nation with a rout of the New York Giants. Surprise, though, the game isn't the story! Despite being sidelined by a recently revealed staph infection, Kellen Winslow grab the media's attention by the balls and screamed "look at me, look at me!"
Winslow was out during last week's Giant game with an undisclosed illness. After the Redskins game, the Browns tight end disclosed the illness to ESPN.com and began to complain about the Browns' treatment of his condition.
In explaining why he didn't come public in the first place, Winslow explained that "I didn't want to be a distraction and I didn't want it to steer us away from our focus, which was on the Washington Redskins." But now that the game is over, I guess being a distraction is fair game.
Before going public, Winslow met with Browns general manager, Phil Savage, to talk about the situation. In describing the meeting Winslow said, "I didn't get a 'How are you doing Kellen? It's good to have you back.' Nothing like that." Winslow continued with - cue the violin - "I was very disappointed. I basically told him I don't feel appreciated on this team by you, and I feel like a piece of meat sometimes."
Good Lord! What is this, Days of Our Lives NFL style? I never thought I'd yell "SUCK IT UP" to an athlete with the caliber of Kellen Winslow. Well actually I yell at my TV while watching the Browns all the time, always from the comfort of my living room, safe from linebackers hungry for a sack.
The problem with this to me is the obvious, Winslow originally said he didn't want to cause a distraction, but isn't that what he's doing? He went on to say that he loves playing for the Browns and with the players, but that there are some problems with the front office. Fair enough, I suppose, but I don't get why these superstar athletes that make millions of sometimes undeserved dollars feel the need to go public with these problems rather than working it out within, so that they don't CAUSE A DISTRACTION.
Even funnier, he complains that he's treated like a piece of meat that's unappreciated by the team. First of all, professional athletes are to some extent pieces of meat. General managers buy them when they're fresh and throw them out when they start rotting. Second point... under appreciated? Really? You want to play the under appreciated card, Winslow? Well alright then! Let's go over this superstar's stats over his amazing career with the Cleveland Browns.
2004: 5 catches for 50 yards in a season cut short by injury.
2005: 0 catches for 0 yards in a season cut short by unbelievable, un-Godly stupidity in getting into a motorcycle accident, something Mr. Winslow wasn't supposed to be doing according to his contract.
2006: 89 catches for 875 yards in a season where he finally starts to meet expectations.
2007: 82 catches for 1106 yards in a pro-bowl year. Exactly what the Browns thought they were playing for in the first place.
No, the Browns woes throughout the years aren't entirely to be blamed on Winslow, but he certainly hasn't led a LeBron-esque resurgence in the Browns. In fact, the Browns haven't made the playoffs since he joined the team (although, to be fair, they were 10-6 last year).
So quit your complaining, Winslow, take your $29 million dollar contract (oh poor you!), get healed and get back on the field so you can show us why we should care when you complain.
