Clay Aiken Finally Admits To Being Gay

Clay Aiken Finally Admits To Being Gay

Dear College OTR readers,

The time has finally come. Clay Aiken has come out of the closet.

Perez Hilton has the cover of the newest People magazine which features Aiken, his new child and the headline “Yes, I’m Gay.” (Sidenote: So unoriginal, People. Remember Lance Bass’s own cover proclaiming, “I’m Gay”?)

So why is that of importance for College OTR?

Because so many of you steadfast ClayHeads have earnestly defended Aiken’s sexuality in the past, so clearly you care. An August post entitled Clay Aiken Is A Proud Papa had commenters up in arms. One included a quote from Clay himself: "One thing I've found of people in the public eye," Aiken says, "either you're a womanizer or you've got to be gay. Since I’m neither one of those, people are completely concerned about me. They're like, 'What are you then?' I'm sure it has to do with being raised by women. I wouldn't want somebody gawking at my mom and grabbing her butt and catcalling at her, trying to hook up with her at a bar. I'm not saying I'm not going to look. Hello! But you know what I mean?"

Someone else asked: “I guess you know Clay so you can be the one to determine he’s gay.”

I bring these up not to belittle our dear readers or even to bash Clay. It’s just goes to show that behind every rumor, there may just be a grain of truth, though each person needs to come out in their own time.

As such, we wish nothing but good things for Aiken. As the tagline for the cover quotes him as saying, “I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things.” He can now live his life without pretending to be something he is not.

Be proud of who you are Aikin and your fans will stick by you… as our very vocal OTR readers have clearly shown.

I am a big Clay fan and I will continue to be. He is extremely talented and his concerts are the best ever. I didn't think he was gay but I am glad it is out so he can finally be at peace with himself. Posted 09/23/2008 6:08 PMReply

I've always liked Clay, and I had concluded a long time ago he was gay due to overwhelming evidence. However, what disturbs me is not that he's gay, but that he lied about it so blatantly. Ricky Martin just refuses to comment, but Clay specifically said so many times that he's not gay that it makes me wonder what else he's lying about-- or maybe he was also lying to himself this whole time. I've liked Clay since I first saw him on American Idol. I did not think he was gay, especially after having read his book. I wonder when and why he decided to announce. I also wonder if he has been pressured so much by the media that he believes it's just easier this way. Is this just a way to make people stop asking. Posted 09/23/2008 11:09 PMReply

I absolutely hate that he lied to his fans~I believed him, why not? And he persisted in the lie~I believed in him and defended him. I don't know if I'll stay his fan; I'm confused--it will take a while to get over--not his being gay, I'm okay with that, but the lying makes me feel so bad. (When he had his son with his friend, it made me wonder though.) I always stuck by him because I didn't think he was a liar. Now what? Posted 09/23/2008 11:36 PMReply

It takes many gay people years, sometimes decades to come to terms with their sexuality in this homophobic society. Clay is only 29 & was a pretty sheltered babe of 23 when he first auditioned for "Idol," coming from a very conservative Southern Baptist background. He has had to come into his own in front of millions & I'm sure it couldn't have been easy. Congratulations to him for making this courageous & loving decision for both himself & his adorable son. Seriously, anyone surprised by this is clearly mentally challenged. Or in denial, because they're the fan-girls that are attracted to overtly gay-acting, femme men. However, I do think he's got a voice-it's just that this isn't even news. WTF. Posted 09/24/2008 08:07 AMReply

Congratulations to Clay. I have always been a fan and love him even more now that he has admitted he is gay. As he said he does not want to raise his child to lie or hide things. I think this shows he has tremendous character. As far as those who are bothered becaused he " lied " about it before then they don't understand just how hard it is to " come out " in this world we live in. Clay I just want to say that your true friends will still be with you. And the others well...To h--- with them they were not friends to begin with. You don't pick your friends according to whether they live like you or not. I think Clay will be a GREAT dad.I know lots of gays being gay myself and the ones that are raising children are much better parents than " straight " couples that I know. It is very difficult for many even in these days to come out and admitt they are gay. Clay has the character to come out and he should be admired for that. As far as whether he is not being honest about other things or not lets just support him now instead of looking for things that are not there. Posted 09/24/2008 6:38 PMReply

Clay lied for 5 years and his fans defended him against their own friends remarks that he was Gay. He has been lying about MANY other things also the last 3 years. His voice is worse and many fans are through with him NOW! Bye Bye Clay! Posted 09/29/2008 10:20 AMReply

I'm embarassed to admit that I was one of those crazy Claymates who defended him when he said he was not gay. I have lost all respect for him, not because he is gay, but because he lied too many times. Now he is trying to say that he never denied being gay. His career as a pop singer is over. He will have to hang out at Broadway or have no singing gigs at all. Posted 10/05/2008 10:49 AMReply

I don't think he's gay. I think someone (I think we all know who) led him on, took advantage of his shyness with women and suggested he must therefore be gay. One encounter does not make you gay. I'm waiting for him to recant. I give it two years, and I know others who know him far better than I do who agree.
