Cornell Alumnus Says Obama Win "Trashed" the American Dream

After John McCain’s bitter defeat last week, the Republican Party split into two. While some members of the GOP willingly conceded the night to the Democrats acknowledging that the better man won, others have continued kicking and screaming into the cold, dark night.

Case and point: Paul Ibrahim, a Cornell alumnus, is a member of the North Star Writers Group; he’s also a bleeding-heart Republican who is intent on devaluating Obama’s historic victory.

In an op-ed entitled “Even Before Obama, I Already Knew That I Could,” Ibrahim argues that Obama’s win isn’t a testament to the American Dream – only a detriment to it.

He writes:

The unfortunate truth, however, is that Obama’s election is a tremendous devaluation of the American Dream. It teaches us that the recipe for success is not achievement, but cunning. Yet somehow, everyone has fallen victim to the conventional wisdom that “we now know we can do anything.”

[…]This fluke of an election has taught us the wrong lessons about how to achieve our aspirations. Don’t cheapen the American Dream by assigning it to Obama’s unfortunate election.

If you can’t beat them, downplay their victory, huh?

Granted, Ibrahim makes some valid points. The notion that we can now accomplish anything simply because Obama won the presidential election is admittedly absurd. He didn’t change the world in one night, despite what some might say.

However, given Ibrahim’s apparent agenda, it’s difficult to accept his opinion as anything other than the mad ramblings of a bitter, distraught individual whose party is in a state of disarray.
