Could A Male Pantyhose Trend Sweep NYU?

Could A Male Pantyhose Trend Sweep NYU?

It’s hard to be a fashion forward guy in college. Even at NYU, which is in the fashion capital of the U.S., finding the right style before it becomes a tired fad can be hard. It takes a good eye and good taste. Well now clothing connoisseurs can check out a fashion statement making waves across the globe… the mantyhose.

Seinfeld popularized mixing men’s clothing with female apparel back when the show introduced the Bro, the male bra. With breast support conquered, men can now delve into the world of pantyhose. It can provide a way to dress differently, a way to stay warm and even a medically beneficial way to improve circulation.

Male pantyhose is not a new concept, though. In 1999, G. Lieberman & Sons began to manufacture a pantyhose line geared towards men called Comfilon, and then, in 2002, a German company jumped into the market with WoMan, a unisex product line. Since then, other products and lines have continued to emerge.

Of course, you’re skeptical. Who would wear such a thing? How does one wear such a thing? Wouldn’t such a thing hurt your, um, thing? To answer all these questions and more, visit the Project e-MANcipate website, a site founded in 2003 simply to speed up the acceptance of male pantyhose and to address any and all concerns.

I wish I was kidding, but I am not.

I think I can say definitely NOT fratty. That picture may actually be the antithesis of everything that has ever been fratty, ever. Ever.

I have been wearing pantyhose for many years, but not for fashion. They work great as extra warmth under my pants on my motorcycle when it gets colder out. When I lived in NY they felt GREAT under my dress slacks as they acted like a liner and make slacks feel way better, not to mention helping to keep warm when its very cold. Pantyhose also definitely help reduce leg fatigue if the lycra content is in the higher range. However, as much as I think they should be marketed to men for what I mentioned above, the "fashion" idea is a ways off and I personally do not think I will look good when I am on my Harley with shorts and pantyhose - lol. Pantyhose ROCK if you like them but let’s understand I mean for PRACTICAL reasons and they are way more comfortable then long underwear. I do think opaque pantyhose or tights would be good for fashion under slacks as they would replace dress sox and give more warmth when cold then sheer pantyhose do. KEEP in mind be comfortable shaving of the legs is almost a must or they will sag! I am a hard core conservative biker, a man and if you want to tell me otherwise, tell me to my face! Live FREE and do not let others dictate YOUR life because of their own insecurities….. Posted 10/18/2008 08:40 AMReply

I'll second what the guy w/the motorcycle says. I don't ride motorcycles, but I'm a runner/cyclist and the hose are great for keeping the chill off my legs on chilly mornings, w/o adding bulk or too much warmth after getting warmed up. I started wearing pantyhose for leg support when I started getting some varicose veins while in my late 30s. Since then, I've discovered a whole range of benefits, like anonymous above says.

Hell yeah! I wear my hose all of the time and my wife does not care. Stop hating on the hose and let people do what they want to. We are stipulated from an early age at what is right from wrong. Maybe those stipulations need to be over looked, I mean we now have a black president. Posted 12/07/2008 7:24 PMReply

I've moved to an area with a colder climate...like -20 with the wind chill. I tried a pair of my wifes pantyhose after hearing some say they provided warmth. Wow! They are pretty darn effective. I now have permanently borrowed 3-4 pairs. She doesn't care. Posted 12/18/2008 12:36 AMReply

I'm a very straight (heterosexual)male...who happens to love the look and feel of all types of hosiery both on me and on the female form. What I don't understand is how anyone thinks that patterns like the one shown in the picture will help open people's minds about the suitability of the garment for men...let's stay with solids (opaque tights) and sheers (pantyhose) for now.

I would like for some female to explain exactly why they think that it is wierd, gross or other for a man to wear waist-length hosiery...BTW, socks of any kind are technically 'hosiery' too.

I'd also love to hear an explanation from anyone as to why people automatically assume that a man wearing tights or pantyhose is a homosexual. I wear tights and - depending on my mood - a mid-thigh skirt; I can assure you that I am FAR from being a homosexual... I've found that females are a bit more supportive, but there are those out there who seem to have a revulsion to the idea.....
