Detroit Newspapers Cut Home Delivery, Journalism Students Panic

The newspaper industry was in a crisis long before anyone had heard of a sub-prime mortgage. Now that the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News have cut home delivery of its paper to only Thursday, Friday and Sunday, it's really time for journalism students to freak out.

Both Michigan newspapers will be focusing more on online content, hoping that this is what their readers are really looking for. New online content will focus on subject-specific blogs and forums, such as "Ask a Physician" and "Momslikeme.com."

If other major newspapers follow Detroit's lead, journalism students are going to want to brush up on their computer skills because simply being able to type is not going to cut it in a world where print-editions are a forgotten tradition.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see how readers react to no longer having a paper waiting on their front step when they wake up in the morning. With the automobile industry gasping for breath, the last thing Detroit needs is for more to go wrong...at least they still have hockey?
