Get ready to enter a land of make-believe, where heroes triumph and villains fall. I’m not talking about fairytales, but rather fantasy sports.
More than 25 million people play fantasy sports each year and now all of these fanatics will have a new object of obsession: Fantasy College Sports.
The WSJ.com reports that, although CBSSports.com launched a fantasy college football league a few years ago, they had previously relied only on teams and positions to identify players rather than their real names and stats, for fear of penalty by the NCAA. But a recent Supreme Court decision to refuse to hear a case where the MLB accused a fantasy sports company of infringing on their rights to names and stats, opened the door for other companies to jump into the fantasy realm.
As a result, CBSSports.com has become the first company to offer Fantasy College Football (with Fantasy College Basketball on the horizon) with real identifiers used. So, “FLORIDA QB” is out, and “Tim Tebow” is in.
The NCAA has warily decided to step back and let it all happen, and why shouldn’t they?– the game will increase their exposure as well. It’s a win-win-win situation. But CBS has been warned… the NCAA will be watching them very closely.
So will you be signing up? And does it take some of the fun away, knowing that soon the players on your carefully crafted roster will soon graduate and move on?
