Drinking Smarter with Tech, Games, and Gadgets

Drinking Smarter with Tech, Games, and Gadgets

Who says drinking and technology don't mix? If you ask my recently deceased keyboard which befell an unfortunate soda-spilling accident, it would say never. However, much like the applications I use every day on my computer to check email, keep in touch with friends, and write articles like this one, there are programs, games, and even a gadget or two that help make drinking even more fun.

Power Hour App
Anyone who has ever spent time in a dorm knows that playing power hour is a sure-fire way to get a head start on the evening's festivities. But half-way through everyone's already starting to feel it and losing track of the clock can be troublesome. Thankfully this little app for Mac OS X keeps you and your friends up to snuff. You can set up a playlist in iTunes and sync it to this application. The program changes songs every sixty seconds and includes additional features like playing an alert every minute. The song features are also pretty nifty- you can shuffle your song selection and randomize which 60 second chunk you hear from each track.

iPod Breathalyzer
This gadget is for those that want to drink but do so responsibly. It attaches to the bottom of your iPod or iPhone and includes a fold-out nozzle so you can administer your own breathalyzer test. At about $80 this might sound expensive but when you consider it's other functions the price tag might not seem so high. Wanting to stand out in a sea of iPod accessories, the company behind this add-on went a step further and put in an FM transmitter. Once you know it's safe to drive you can listen to your iPod through your car's radio. That, my friends, is what we in the iPod accessories biz call a twofer. B.A.L. Widget
If you want to go old school and calculate your blood alcohol level the way you might want to give this Widget a try. After installing the Widget to your Dashboard you'll see a pretty easy interface that lets you input your gender, weight, what you've been drinking, and the number of drinks you've consumed over how long a period of time. Punch it in and you're given BAC. Now, you might be asking, “BAC? What happened to BAL?” Well, as the Widget points out, the number is merely an estimation and gives your Blood Alcohol Concentration. But it's still, nonetheless, a handy guide for making sure you're taking it easy. Just remember- if you feel like you might have had one too many, you probably have.

WiiWare's Pong Toss
Beer pong, Beirut, whatever you want to call it, the game of throwing ping pong balls into plastic cups is one part party game and one part timeless art. For their first entry in their WiiWare series “Frat Party Games” developer JV Games tried to capture that spirit with Pong Toss. For only 800 Wii Points ($8.00) up to four players can go head to head to compete for pong glory. Originally titled “Beer Pong” the name was soon changed so as not to offend parents of younger children. But the mechanics are the same. True, one of the best parts of beer pong is absent from this video game- the beer itself! My suggestion? Grab a six-pack and make a drinking game out of it to play with your roommates when you're not having a party. Or, go it alone and practice your form. Reviews for this game have been mixed but, for eight bucks, it's worth checking out.
