It seems like just yesterday that we were hearing that Eric Mangini named his son Zack Brett Mangini after the Jets’ newly acquired quarterback. Hey at least he didn’t make the middle name Favre right?
Well, he’ll probably never tell his kid that story now, as he no longer works for the Jets after being fired today. The Jets were eliminated from the playoffs by the Miami Dolphins, and the Jets’ management, expecting nothing short of a Super Bowl win after landing Favre, have taken their frustrations out on Mangini.
But the team doesn’t think the coach alone should be blamed for the team’s misfortune.
“I don’t think he should shoulder a lot of the blame for the way this season has went,” wide receiver Laveranues Coles said. “Blame everybody.”
Nose tackle Kris Jenkins bristled when Mangini’s future became a question.
“I’ll never have anything bad to say about him,” he said. “You’ve got to understand this: This man has a position where, not only does he have to deal with the coaching staff, he has to deal with 53 egos every single day. He has to scout every single day. I don’t care what anybody says.’ ”
Ah well, I’m sure he’ll still have a future somewhere. I hear the Detroit Lions are hiring…
