Golden Girl Estelle Getty was a wise-cracker with wise words. Although she passed away yesterday, college students should continue to live by her advice.
Golden Girls' star, Estelle Getty passed away yesterday but not without leaving behind a legacy. Getty played the show's resident firecracker leading old lady, Sophia. Getty's performance on the show was so memorable that she won both an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it but her real claim to fame was her life-altering advice on the show. Contrary to the obvious age difference, college students can learn a great deal from Sophia. Here are a couple of Sophia's best words of wisdom easily applicable to the college life.
Sophia: There's just something I don't like about him. I can't put my finger on it, but if I did, I'd have to wash it.
Great advice to keep in mind when the beer goggles at a party start to kick in. So ladies and gents - don't settle for less!
Sophia: Are you kidding? I can see just fine. [motions to Blanche] Who's the black guy?
Thursday nights at college campuses are jam-packed with Dionysian fun, but the key to a rockin' good time is knowing when too much is enough. When you're mistaking your girlfriends for black guys, it's definitely time to close the tab at the bar.
Rose: Sophia, is that a Captain Jack's Seafood Shandee uniform you're wearing?
Sophia: No, Rose. I'm off to discover the Straits of Magellan. Yo ho!
Never be ashamed of working a terrible job, this not only makes you understand the value of a dollar but will make you think twice about snapping at the McDonald's drive-thru employee for getting your order wrong. So wear those uniforms loud and proud!
Sophia: It's too tight, it's too short and it shows too much cleavage for a woman your age.
Before going out, college students typically consult and confer with roommates about their outfits. It's true that going out to the clubs does not call for church-going clothes but at least use Sophia's words as a measuring stick for what's offensively inappropriate.
She may have passed away but no one can deny that Estelle Getty left behind memorable words to live by. So thank you for being a friend, Estelle!
