Facebook's Road to Becoming MySpace Continues: The Advent of IM Spam

I first noticed this happening this weekend when I got an IM on Facebook with a surprisingly attractive offer for a $500 Macy’s gift card. After I overcame the initial shock that my ex-girlfriend and I were on speaking terms again, I realized that no, it was in fact just spam.

Long ago, I deleted my MySpace account because yes, MySpace was god-awful and I rarely used it, but mainly because someone hacked into my account and started posting spam all over everyone’s walls. Well now it seems the same plague has afflicted Facebook, with users’ accounts becoming slavebots and spewing Macy’s gift card spam everywhere.

There has yet to be an official announcement from Facebook about what they’re going to do about the spam, nor are there explicit instructions on how to avoid this from happening to your profile. But unlike MySpace, you can be damn sure I’m not going to be deleting my Facebook if it happens to me.

I believe there’s a special place in hell for spammers. Like this guy:

MySpace fixed their spam prob and has totally revamped the site. I deleted to, but came back and was pleasantly surprised. Posted 10/27/2008 5:07 PMReply
