In 2005, professional skier Tanner Hall attempted to switch 900 over Chad’s Gap, a 120-foot backcountry gap in the Wasatch Mountains in Utah and broke both ankles in the process. He immediately knew and could be heard screaming that he'd broken his ankles.

Figure skater Jessica Dube was slashed in the face by the blade of her partner Bryce Davison during side-by-side camel spins at the 2007 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. She received 80 stitches to the face that night and was treated for post-traumatic stress disorder.

At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, skier Hermann Maier took a devastating fall during the downhill race but also captured the gold medal in the Super G and the Giant Slalom.

At the 2004 Skate America competition, Maxim Marinin fell while lifting his partner Tatiana Totmianina into a lasso lift and she fell head first into the ice. The two went on to compete at the 2006 Olympics in Torino.

During a 1989 hockey game between the St. Louis Blues and the Buffalo Sabres, Clint Malarchuk nearly died when Steve Tuttle and Uwe Kruff collided and Tuttle’s skate blade slashed Malarchuk’s jugular. Jim Pizzutelli, the team’s athletic trainer, reached into his neck to pinch off the bleeding and doctors required 300 stitches to close the wound. The tenacious Malarchuk returned to practice four days after the accident.
