Florida State has somewhat of an anomaly on its hands… a football player that’s actually smart. And at FSU, not UF, no less!
Myron Rolle, one of the team’s top defensive players, may soon have to choose between NFL glory or academic advancement. Rolle, a 3.75 pre-med student, is a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship... you know, only the most prestigious educational honor an American undergraduate can get.
The tough choices are already starting. The last step in the Rhodes application process includes an interview in Birmingham, AL. Unfortunately, the required interview just happens to land on Nov. 22, the same day the Noles are schedule to play Maryland, a game that could be pivotal in the ACC’s Atlantic Division standings. Logistically, the only way it can work out is if the game is scheduled at night so Rolle could potentially fly back by halftime.
Despite what happens with the scheduling, though, Rolle knows what he has to do. Sports Illustrated reports:
On Wednesday, however, Rolle told me: "I'm definitely going to Birmingham.
"The more I do mock interviews here at school and think about what I want to say [to the committee], I have grown to really want to be a Rhodes Scholar," said Rolle. "If it takes missing a game, that's what it takes."
Most refreshing of all: His coaches agree.
"We couldn't be more proud of this happening for one of our players," FSU coach Bobby Bowden said Wednesday. "It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance and you wouldn't dare deny him that. I just hope he wins it."
Guys, remember this moment. Who knows when it will happen in football again.
