In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence Wilkerson, the former top aide to Colin Powell, compares the most hated person in the world, George W. Bush, to the most annoying one, Sarah Palin.
The parallel between these two individuals, while somewhat tenuous, is wholly ingenious—and damned fitting at times.
Let’s look at the facts: Bush was an inexperienced nitwit who had a meteoric rise to power; Palin was the same but was stopped short of the vice presidency by the Obama Love train. They both wrestle with the English language, oftentimes tripping over their words or making gross non sequiturs during interviews. They’re both from states that are an embarrassment to the union.
That all said, we turn to Lawrence for the ‘official’ analysis:
We had this confluence of characters--and I use that term very carefully--that included people like Powell, Dick Cheney, Condi Rice, and so forth, which allowed one perception to be "the dream team." It allowed everybody to believe that this Sarah Palin-like president--because, let's face it, that's what he was--was going to be protected by this national- security elite, tested in the cauldrons of fire. What in effect happened was that a very astute, probably the most astute, bureaucratic entrepreneur I've ever run into in my life became the vice president of the United States.
Ah, so Dick Cheney does run the country? Not a surprise, but still frightening.
Perhaps the most hilarious aspect of this parallel, however, is that many believe it is more an insult to Palin than Bush.
Political commentator Matthew Yglesias writes:
I'm going to say "more insulting to Palin." Palin's something of a laughingstock, but Bush is a villain. I mean, he wrecked the world economy, he led to millions of Iraqis being forced to flee their homes, he's a total disaster and a disgrace. Palin gave bad answers in TV interviews. There's no real comparison.
So. Damn. True.

Stumble It

And how is that different from Barack "I've been to all 57 states" Obama? All of 143 days as a US Senator...Palin a laughingstock? Tina Fey was the laughingstock. If you want to laugh, you should watch a Biden interview. Posted 12/31/2008 10:10 AMReply
(which I'm sure was a misspeak)nonsense to compare Obama to Palin. I have no doubt that Obama knows ALL 50 states and their capitals. Does anyone want to go out on the limb and claim the same for Palin? Posted 12/31/2008 3:36 PMReply
I hate it when someone trashes our President. I know every President starts out with just under half of the electorate being for the runner-up. Our country is so politically polarized we can't discuss our leaders without disparaging them. What a shame.
Wouldn't it be great to have a political discussion without having to demean one another? I personally think that President Bush has done a good job, but I recognize that most of the public do not share my evaluation. I did not vote for Mr Obama, but I will support him when he is sworn in as my President. He will make bone headed mistakes. All Presidents do. Let's treat our future Presidents better than our past ones. You have to have a lot on the ball to become President, especially if you become a two term one as Mr Bush has done.
Mister Lawrence Wilkerson, the former top aide to Colin Powell quoted in the article sounds like he is just expressing sour grapes or maybe he was misquoted. It is hard to tell.
Thank you Mr Bush for keeping the terrorists occupied abroad and not in our city streets. I am not for killing, but if we must kill, then do it on their soil, not ours. Posted 01/02/2009 2:32 PMReply
