Fox Sports Anchor and FSU Alum Danyelle Sargent Forgets Dead People Don't Talk

Sometimes it’s hard remember stuff like whether someone is alive or not, at least if you’re Danyelle Sargent. Recently while interviewing new San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, Sargent said that she’d heard Singletary called his deceased mentor Bill Walsh to tell him about the promotion.

According to the San Jose Mercury News:

During a pregame interview, Fox Sports sideline reporter Danyelle Sargent asked Singletary the following question: "I heard that your mentor Bill Walsh was one of the first phone calls that you made when you found out that you had the job. What does it mean to you to be the head coach of the 49ers?"

Singletary was understandably tongue-tied, since Walsh died in July 2007. Sargent interrupted his answer and said into her earpiece, "I'm sorry. Oh. I'm sorry. What, what did I, what was wrong?"

… Fox producers were understandably mortified and didn't air that portion of the interview. (Interestingly, the "pregame" interview aired after the opening kickoff Sunday, and although it was taped, it could have left viewers with the impression that Singletary was talking to a reporter instead of coaching.)

But the clip was part of the "open feed" that live telecasts use and that news organizations can access for clips and highlights. Mike Francesa, host of New York station WNBC's "Mike'd Up," showed the gaffe late Sunday night.

For those of you feeling nostalgic for the pre-bailout days, Sargent’s recent slip-up should bring you back to 2006, when she accidentally said, “What the **** was that?” on air. Looks like the FSU grad won’t be in line for any on-air improvisation for quite some time, but we're left wondering if Sargent will approach Francesca about airing her mistake and ask, "What the **** was that?"
