Happy Festivus one and all! Put away stress of Christmas shopping and the challenges of latke-making, for today, December 23, is the day we celebrate “a Festivus for the rest of us.”
For those outside the reach of pop culture, this anti-consumerism holiday hit the mainstream thanks to “The Strike” episode of Seinfeld that first aired on December 18, 1997.
Since then, the traditions of Festivus have spread amongst us including the airing of grievances, the feats of strength and, of course, the aluminum pole. Lest you not believe the extent of current Festivus acceptance, check out festivuspoles.com where you can buy your very own Festivus Pole. There’s even a book, written by Allen Salkin, about this not-so-joyous holiday.
So get in the holiday spirit and get out your grievances, it’s Festivus time. And for newbies, sit back, relax and watch the story behind the celebration:
