Hurricane Ike, Hurricane Hanna and Tropical Storm Joesphine Are Just The Beginning: The Projected Path to Disaster

Here we go again. Hot on the trail of Hurricane Hanna is yet another storm to worry about. And this time, Mother Nature isn’t messing around.

Hurricane Ike had quite the growth spurt yesterday, jumping from a Category 1 to a Category 4 in about six hours. That means it now packs a powerful 135-mph sustained winds. According to CNN, it’s too early to know if it will hit land, but the projected path indicates Ike could make a visit anywhere from Jamaica to South Florida.

Sorry, University of Miami, forget football. It’s time to be obsessed with a different kind of Hurricane.

UM isn’t alone, though. It’s going to be an interesting fall for coastal colleges. Colorado hurricane researchers are predicting five tropical storms in the Atlantic this September, four of which will be hurricanes. It’s not hard to believe considering Hanna, Ike and Tropical Storm Josephine are all swirling out there.

The AP reports on the forecast:

Former Colorado State University climatologist William Gray said Tuesday that would be nearly twice as busy as an average September. Gray has been issuing hurricane forecasts at Colorado State University for 25 years.

For college students this means September will be no ordinary month on campus. While they can rejoice over cancelled classes, let’s not forget the downsides. Danger, destruction and cancelled football games.

Even more food for thought: How in the world did Colorado State become hurricane experts? Geography can be a tricky subject, but last time I checked Colorado was far from storm central.
