Remember when Palm Pilots came out? They were so cool and came with that nifty pen thing. It was like a teeny, tiny computer right in the palm (get it?) of your hand. Now, IMOVIO is coming out with its own extra small handheld computer called the iKit.
The name conjures up images of Michael Knight, and coincidentally the computer belongs more in the time of Knight Rider than today’s cutting edge advancements. Yes, the iKit is a Linux-based pocket-sized computer complete with Wi-Fi, webcam, movie and music playback and Bluetooth, but it just can’t compete in an iPhone-filled world.
The iKit has a measly 192MB inside and battery life is an impressive 250 hours, impressive if you like your computer on standby. For actual use, get ready to enjoy a whopping three hours of juice. As Wired explains, the problems continue to pile on:
Worse, the iKit doesn't come with any 3G connectivity. The internal USB connection needs to be modified to accommodate an HSDPA dongle. If we assume that the cell carriers will take care of that, then the iKit's next USP goes out the window: The press release claims that the iKit is cheaper than competitors, at £100 ($172). How much cheaper than, say, an iPhone? £500 ($860), apparently.
This figure is achieved by adding in the price of an 18 month iPhone contract. Of course, you'll need some kind of data plan to make the iKit work, too, so it seems like a rather unfair, if not desperate, comparison.
So will iMovio's product survive? Perhaps, if you like your technology less functional, but more cute.
