Intern Alert: Dress to Impress at the Office

Intern Alert: Dress to Impress at the Office

Dress for success. It’s trite, but it’s good advice nonetheless. Even in today’s business-casual, and business-real-casual world, it’s important to put your best self forward.

And these wise words don’t only apply to tried-and-true exec-types. Even college interns can get a jumpstart on their careers, and that starts in the closet. To help you figure out what clothes can make the best impression, BNET.com has put together a What to Wear to Work guide, including style rules, tips to upgrade your look, a video shopping resource and a how-to for ordering a suit.

Here at OTR, the dress code is on the casual end of the spectrum, but we decided to put BNET’s tips to the test. Intern Jane (as we’ll call her) sacrificed herself to the work wardrobe gods and incorporated the rules and ideas into her outfits. The result? Intern Jane left yesterday dressing like a shlump, but returned today looking super chic.

Check out the small changes Intern Jane made, while maintaining comfort and keeping spending to a minimum:

  • She started by clipping pictures from her favorite magazines for inspiration.
  • She traded in her faded Levi’s for a darker denim, cinched with a belt.
  • Forget spaghetti straps. Intern Jane put those bra straps back where they belonged and covered up with a structured jacket.
  • Flip flops were forsaken, and stylish flats took their place.
  • She ditched leggings and other fad items, and instead accessorized with one trendy accent.

By the end of the day, our boss had definitely taken noticed. Intern Jane got more responsibility and more respect. Somehow I think the frayed fashion is gone forever, at least from 9-5.
