New York City is the dream locale for thousands of young people who want to leave their hometown in B.F.E., to become a famous model or to have an opportunity to make millions in the business world. For those of us who want to make it to the top of the magazine chain there is a group of hip and in-the-know gurus who are here to help.
Last night the founders and contributors of Ed2010, a group for young magazine editors and interns, threw the Seventh Annual Welcome to New York City Party for magazine interns at the trendy Boat Basin Café. Nearly all New York magazines were represented by fresh college kids who sported their recently acquired NYC fashion knowledge. This was THE place to rub elbows with the future editors of Cosmopolitan, ESPN The Magazine, Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone, Seventeen, etc.
Talk about some amazing networking opportunities!
Tanner Stransky, Ed On Campus Director and Drake University alum, was delighted there was such a large turnout. He estimated more than 200 interns attended, which was more than double the amount who came to last year’s party.
“The main purpose of the event is to make friends. Sometimes people can be catty, but these are the people who are going to hire you in five years,” Stransky explained. “You need to make friends.”
Internships can provide dozens of opportunities and can possibly lead to a job. Becky Akinyode of Georgetown University is interning this summer with Bergdorf Goodman. Akinyode interns in the buying department for the men’s line where she ships and receives men’s clothes from top designers like Dolce and Gabbana and Armani.
“It really shows what the life of a buyer is like. It is a lot of computing, predicting styles and knowing what to buy,” Akinyode said. "I didn't know it was so much computing."
Many of these interns discovered their internships through Ed2010’s website, where magazines post their internship openings. Thanks to Ed2010 these college kids are having an experience of a lifetime in one of the most amazing cities in the world.
