John McCain and Barack Obama to Appear at Columbia on 9/11

Mark your calendars, New Yorkers!

Next Thursday, John McCain and Barack Obama will both appear at Columbia to speak on behalf of "ServiceNation, an organization that aims to increase public service participation."

That’s right – McCain and Obama on the same stage at the same time.

In the words of the illustrious Columbia BWOG, “Holy shit.”

The Columbia Spectator reports:

"Both Obama and McCain have confirmed their attendance," Bollinger said. The candidates will speak separately about public service at an event sponsored by ServiceNation, a non-partisan coalition devoted to increasing the commitment of citizens to public service to 100 million people by 2010.

 

Students will be able to enter a ticket lottery to reserve seats, according to an e-mail Bollinger sent to students. By 9:50 p.m., not all students had received the e-mail. But he warned that space for students is limited. According to ServiceNation, 500 "leaders of all ages," are expected to attend the two-day Summit, which may curtail the amount of seats available to students. "We will ensure that all seating available goes to students in our University community," Bollinger said. Students will receive an e-mail with details regarding lottery registration on Thursday.

Considering Roone Arledge Auditorium only seats 1,500 people and half the world will be trying to get into this event, students shouldn’t expect to score tickets without having to sell their souls to the devil, which some might argue they already did to get into the Ivy League.

Will the two presidential hopefuls refrain from taking jabs at each other for the sake of a good cause? Probably not.

For politicians, a good cause is nothing more than an elevated platform for blatant pandering.
