Love Fun? Hate Drinking? "UMix" is Supposedly for You

Because this comes up in a Google Image search for "wholesome."

I’m not exactly sure how to go about commenting on this article from the Daily. Apparently this organization on campus called UMix throws parties at the Union for kids who listened during D.A.R.E. extremely well and turn their noses up at anyone who didn't.

So what does UMix do exactly? Let’s paint a picture:

On the Friday night before the Michigan-Michigan State football game three weeks ago, thousands of students wandered from bar to bar and party to party, enjoying the start of the weekend.

Meanwhile, a group of about 500 students was partying in the Michigan Union at a get-together sponsored by the University. In the place of alcohol, there was a movie, free food and karaoke.

There are also “craft activities” and board games. Hooray summer camp! Apparently this program has been running for three years at Michigan, but honestly this is the first I’ve heard of it. So who goes to these events and why?

While painting a pumpkin and watching other her peers belt out the words to the Backstreet Boys’ "I Want It That Way," Kinesiology junior Kara Miller expressed that sentiment.

"I don't drink, so there's not a ton to do at night other than like hang out with friends or watch a movie, so it's just something else," she said.

Yeah, hanging out with friends and watching movies totally sucks. Which is why I’m walking to the Union by myself to watch a movie instead. And you know what else has karaoke? Bars. And you know what else has games? Parties. Just make your friends drink your beer when you lose, I'm sure they'll find it in their hearts to forgive you. You know they don’t like pour alcohol directly down your throat when you walk into these places right? And also, drunkeness isn't transmitted through airborne pathogens.

Alright, well I do have to restrain myself a bit here and give a tip of the hat to the administration for attempting a non-dickish way to decrease binge drinking on campus that doesn't involve police kicking doors in. But someone needs to teach these kids the “walk around party holding half full cup” trick, which successfully makes everyone think you’re drinking. It’s the sneaky way to be lame!

Just kidding, not drinking is fine if that's your thing, but look, you can still go out to parties with your sodomite alcoholic friends. UMix, keep doing your thing for those who need it, but freshmen, I know college is a big scary place, but you’ve got to graduate from this kind of stuff eventually, or you’ll wind up missing the whole experience.

paul you are out of college have some self respect.
Some people don't drink which is fine. But you know when you are DDing a bunch of your friends and they are beyond wasted and you have to take care of them or watch out for them?
Not so much fun.
thats where I can totally understand umix. dont drink and want to find other people who don't? go to umix.
I go out and drink but you shouldn't be an ass to people who would rather just hang out with other sober kids.

Paul, you have been knocked down a few levels in my book because of this post. Umix is for both the sober AND the drunk. Free food and free movies doesn't sound too bad. While drinking is part of the typical college experience, it's always nice to have an alternative if you choose not to. Let's face it, it's definitely no fun when you're sober and everyone else around you is drunk off their ass. Posted 11/12/2008 9:13 PMReply

@ Anonymous: that's highly unlikely, i mean i'm only a sophomore but in my years following michigan football, we have yet to play a game within the hours of 10 pm and 2 am Posted 11/12/2008 10:35 PMReply

I think that they do away game tailgates for road games.

As to a game from 10pm-2am within your time, Illinois last year was at 7pm and probably came pretty close to 10pm.

Tassi- don't post crap like this. We all like you because you poke fun at people who deserve it. This subtly pokes fun at people who don't drink and usually, people who don't drink have a good reason not to. I personally choose to drink but respect my friends' wishes to avoid it. I understand the humor you're trying to produce in this blog but this was a bad post. Posted 11/13/2008 1:29 PMReply
Bandit Quest
I have to agree with the others. Making fun of Pike is one thing, but making fun of people who have legitimate reasons backing their decisions isn't that funny. Posted 11/13/2008 2:09 PMReply
Johnny Quest
Wow, when even Bandit turns on me... Look, I have no problem with kids who don't drink, which I did say in the article. I barely drank during the first part of college and didn't much care for scuzzy house and frat parties. But I was glad once I did start going out, and I still had a good time with friends even though they were way more trashed than I was most of the time.

These kind of Umix events are maybe good for getting new students acquainted with each other, but like, why would a junior go to that over hanging out with her friends at their own place, watching a movie or playing rock band or boggle or something? I had plenty of sober nights doing that stuff, but why the hell would I go to the Union for it? The concept just strikes me as odd if it's anything besides an orientation event.

Although, counterpoint: free food is ALWAYS good.

Umix doesn't deserve to be defended. And it has nothing to do with drinking, its just that the University picks the lamest events for Umix. How do you expect to attract college students when the main events are old movies and painting pumpkins?

Rush Lodge.

to the 1:29pm post:

You say that Tassi pokes fun at "people who deserve it" -- does this mean that sorority and fraternity members deserve it, but people who don't drink do not deserve it?

anyone who chooses to socially label themselves, whether it be through a greek affiliation or through some nonalcoholic program such as UMIX, is fair game to get hated on.

How about you take life a little less seriously and LAUGH at this rather then getting all upset. I'm in a sorority and roll with the punches every year as the annual hate fest begins. GET OVER IT.

^probably drunk while posting. isnt drinking more of a moral decision than joining a frat or sorority? lol you just compared them. silly. Posted 11/14/2008 10:27 AMReply

drinking isn't really a moral decision. some people just don't like to drink, others choose not to do it for their religion. and then you find the people you really wonder about who actually wait to turn 21. Posted 11/14/2008 12:13 PMReply

Yeah that girl is totally Rob Riggle... oh and I've just recently been trying the going out sober thing. It's actually really fun if you don't tell everyone that you're not drinking and yeah... use the half-empty cup trick. Or the jack and coke, hold the jack.

It's also awesome cuz you can recount the hilarious things your idiot friends do more clearly. You also can encourage/manipulate people to do hilarious shit more effectively.
