Lunch Break: A Happy, Family Friendly Version of The Shining

Stephen King’s The Shining, one of the most haunting horror films ever made, is not for the faint of heart. In fact, when I was younger, I nearly pissed in my pants when I first saw it, because the music coupled with the dark atmosphere had me on edge from start to finish.

This fan-made trailer, however, paints a very different picture of the film by exploiting the fact that many horror movies are heavily reliant upon their musical scores to set the tone of a scene. In other words, by simply changing the tempo, one’s perception of a film can drastically change.

In this instance, the clever editor lightened the mood of The Shining by swapping out the brooding score for one that could easily be found in a Disney film. To intensify the overall effect, he used a friendly narrator to highlight themes that are present in the actual film—the father-son relationship and the father’s struggle with success—but are relatively minor in the grand scheme of things.

The result, of course, is the feeling that “Shining” is a movie you can take the whole family to see, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
