Lunch Break: Astro Girl, The Japanese Version of Supergirl

Everyone knows that Batman is better than Superman, but the Man of Steel does have one thing over the Dark Knight: a hot female sidekick named Supergirl. Now, before the Gotham faithful come out of the woodwork, I am perfectly aware that Batgirl exists; however, I think we can all agree that, based on their costumes alone, Supergirl wins hands down.

Apparently, Japan agrees, because they’ve developed their own version of Supergirl named “Astro Girl,” who wears a similar skimpy outfit and shares the same allergic reaction to glowing green rocks.

However, unlike her progenitor, Astro Girl does come equipped with several… enhancements. For example, she can deflect bullets with her ample bosom, which the show’s director loves to highlight with a close-up shot of the “action” in all its glory. But, more importantly, she possesses the unique ability to being able to engage in poorly choreographed fight sequences against Power Ranger-esque villains in funny rubber costumes. That’s got to count for something, right?

Despite the obvious B-film quality of these movies, Astro Girl 1 & 2 are still worth checking out. You’ll be entertained, enthralled and riveted by the show’s griping narrative, or lack thereof, from start to finish. Plus, you’ll get to ogle Astro Girl for hours on end, which some may argue is the greatest benefit of all.
