In case you haven’t heard, Joaquin Phoenix has allegedly gone completely insane. During his last appearance on David Letterman, he was noticeably absentminded, his speech was completely disjointed, and he appeared to not have showered or shaven for months. Intermittently during the interview, he popped in from his mental space flight to utter some incoherent drivel, but by and large, he wasn't all there.
Personally, I believe he is putting on an elaborate ruse for the sake of a documentary he is currently filming, but until he returns to Earth, let’s buy into his crazy man schtick and assume that he somehow lost his mind whilst portraying Johnny Cash in “Walk the Line.”
On Sunday, Ben Stiller appeared at the Oscars wearing a fake beard and Ray Ban sunglasses in an obvious ploy to get a few laughs at the crazed Phoenix's expense. Needless to say, it worked, because his impersonation was spot on, and Natalie Portman, who was clearly in on the gag, served as an excellent foil to accentuate his craziness.
Still, if you're one of the few that doesn't appreciate everyone kicking Phoenix while he is down, you can still appreciate the clip for Natalie Portman, because she looked stunning.
