Apparently, RNC chair Michael Steele, the Republicans’ answer to Barack Obama, intends to hip-hopify the GOP, according to an interview last week with the Washington Post.
Here’s the exact quote:
"We need messengers to really capture that region -- young, Hispanic, black, a cross section ... We want to convey that the modern-day GOP looks like the conservative party that stands on principles. But we want to apply them to urban-surburban hip-hop settings."
Naturally, Stephen Colbert, the Republicans’ greatest faux supporter, has embraced this call for hip-hopification.
And why wouldn’t he? There’s no one that screams ‘hip-hop icon’ quite like Stephen Colbert, especially after the impressive four-bar rap he laid down during his interview with Nas back in July.
Therefore, if Michael Steele intends to lead the GOP, he must first go head-to-head with Colbert in a debate about the core conservative values and the general focus/direction of the Republican Party. Of course, given the GOP’s new hip-hop initiative, a simple podium-style debate wouldn’t work. And so, a freestyle rap battle must be held to determine who the greatest Republican emcee in the party is: Colbert or newcomer Steele.
If I were a betting man (and I am), I’d go with the former.
