Lunch Break: Will Ferrell's "You're Welcome, America"

If you thought you had seen the last of George W. Bush, think again. He’s back in the limelight with a limited-run Broadway show and an HBO special that should serve as his swam song, his final hoorah before he returns to the cattle ranches of Texas. But wait, this isn’t the real Bush; it is SNL alumnus Will Ferrell masquerading as our former commander-in-chief and doing one heck of a job at it.

Back on Saturday Night Live, Will Ferrell made his career playing a bevy of hilarious recurring characters, including the Spartan cheerleader named Craig, but none came close to the sheer genius and unbridled authenticity of his George W. Bush impersonation.

When Ferrell took the stage in his presidential garb and white wig, he became Bush, masterfully mirroring his mannerisms and speech pattern to a tee. With every spoken word, Ferrell accentuated everything we loved and knew about old George: his now-legendary mispronunciations of common words, his inability to grasp simple logic and his almost childlike ignorance of the world at large.

And so, while Ferrell’s time on SNL and George W.’s tenure as president may finally be over, both have been preserved for future generations with this 90-minute farewell performance.

Here’s a taste of what’s in store for you during the full show, which aired on HBO over the weekend and will air again ad infinitum.
