Married College Students: What Are They Thinking??

Married College Students: What Are They Thinking??

You don’t hear too much conversation in college classrooms beyond complaints about the work load and who has the craziest weekend story, but when a fellow classmate (who can’t be a year or two older than you) begins a sentence with “my husband,” your attention has officially been caught. Your head turns, and you find yourself interrogating the culprit about her apparent marriage.

The percentage of married college students has remained constant over the last few decades at 7%. But that 7% never fails to perplex your mind (as well as spark a bet for how long until they file for divorce). Were they high school sweethearts? Is she pregnant? Are they crazy? How? Whyy!?

The typical thoughts on most college student’s minds are “What am I going to eat for dinner?” or “I should start studying for my midterm tomorrow but The Office is on.” But for that 7%, their thoughts sound more like “What should I cook for my husband?” and “I have to find a way to get out of class early to make couple’s therapy.”

It’s a very strange phenomenon that I will never understand—chopping valuable time off of silly adventures with friends, losing years of immaturity, and forcing yourself to care about someone else. Who wants to do these things?? Not me. Not now.

However, if they really needed the tax break or the guarantee of someone in their bed every night, I sure hope that most of these married college students at least wait until they’re 21. That way, they can  serve alcohol at the reception and make it worthwhile for the guests who are wasting their money on presents that will probably be thrown out in the midst of a messy divorce.
