Matt Lauer, famed Today Show cohost, graduated from the School of Telecommunications of Ohio University… eventually. He left school four credits short of graduating in 1979, but 18 years later he finally received his degree after the university decided to grant him his remaining credits by counting his journalism experience as “independent study.”
While this was certainly an accomplishment, as is his years on the popular morning show, how do you know Lauer has really “made it”? Because he’s been roasted by the Friars Club. Anyone who’s anyone has been ridiculed and mocked mercilessly by celebrities at this soiree. Friday’s event was led by Roastmaster Al Roker and featured Lauer’s friends and coworkers Meredith Viera, Katie Couric and surprise guest Tom Cruise, who notoriously fought with Lauer about psychiatry on a Today Show episode.
New York’s Metro has the highlights:
“Let's be honest. We’re roasting Matt Lauer, not Steven Spielberg. So what’s the upside for me — besides meeting Gilbert Gottfried?”
— Tom Cruise, actor
“‘Today Show fans always come up to me and ask, ‘Do you and Matt really get along?’” And I look them in the eye and say what's in my heart: ‘F--- no.’”
— Meredith Viera, “Today” co-host
“I haven’t gotten this much applause since CBS executives heard a rumor I was leaving.”
— Katie Couric, “CBS Evening New” host
“You wouldn’t imagine that a guy like Matt Lauer and me are close — and we're not.”
— Brian Williams, “NBC Nightly News” host.
Just hearing the innocent-looking Viera say **** is highlight enough. Matt should feel honored.
