In light of the recent economic woes, McCain announced that he will be suspending his campaign to return to Washington and work on resolving the financial crisis. He would also like to postpone Friday’s debate to be held at Ole Miss - and he’s asking Obama to join him.
Poor Ole Miss has been anxiously looking forward to the debates, hoping to improve the area’s reputation. The debate could erase the memory of race problems and hostile mobs and replace it with the squeaky clean image of national politics. But instead, the U.S.’s financial devastation has stolen the school’s thunder.
Tonight Bush is set to address the nation about his proposed $700 billion bailout, but McCain fears this is not the answer since there is no consensus on the plan. Instead, the presidential candidate claims he’d like to bring Democrats and Republicans together as Americans to solve the problem.
The Washington Post blog The Trail has Obama’s reaction:
The Obama campaign said that the two candidates had spoken by phone this morning about releasing a joint statement on principles to govern the financial sector bailout, but that it had no plans to suspend campaigning.
Is McCain doing the right thing by putting the economy before presidential politics? Or is he just trying to save face and squeeze out a few extra votes? And does it matter either way?

Stumble It

Obama loses.
Obama disagrees to suspend his campaign...the McCain campaign will say Obama is putting his ambitions above politics.
Again...Obama loses.
McCain sees this as an opportunity to get out of the debates, play hero, and degrade Obama. Could McCain be doing this purely for the good of the country? Maybe.....but anyone who thinks he's not also doing this for his campaign is deluded.
Senator McCain...there will doubtlessly be more than one problem facing this country at any given time. If you cannot face more than one problem at a time...I don't wish to have you serving as the next president. Posted 09/24/2008 3:58 PMReply
Both candidates are U.S. Senators. This financial crisis will be decided in the U.S. SENATE. Currently, the brilliant plan is that after this 7 hundred billion dollar bail out ... Pelosi and Reed will be in charge of picking who will be in charge of ongoing oversight for continued spending. God help us! This is another example of how Senator John McCain puts country first. All Obama cares about is winning the election at any cost. Obama neglected his duties as U.S. Senator before running for President, and especially after he began running for President. This 'bail out - quick fix" will negatively affect Americans for decades. Many of the bloggers who are criticizing McCain for this decision wouldn't recognize responsibility, or integrity if it bit them on the ass. Keep America strong and safe ... Elect McCain/Palin in November. Posted 09/24/2008 7:49 PMReply
