Miami Bicentennial Countdown

Miami Bicentennial Countdown

The website for Miami's bicentennial celebration has officially launched!  This celebration will finally give MIAMIANS the chance to reflect on the importance of our university.

First and foremost, we are far more important than the University of Miami down in Florida.  Yes, U of Miami has a football team.  But let me know when offensive lineman and linebackers are running the world.

Second, if we want to talk about athletics then we can talk about how Ohio State and Michigan wouldn't have the history it has were it not for our cradle of coaches.  In short, just thank us for Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler.

Last but not least - I could come up with more reasons if I wanted to - the campus that Robert Frost once called "the most beautiful college there ever was," to this day maintains that "beauty," so much so that any high school senior visiting our campus for the first time feels a tingling sensation in their loins.

So well done Miami University!  We may have our doubters, but we know we are truly much more than a Harvard of the Midwest or a J-Crew U.  We know that we've had our problems in the past (redskin mascot, a lack of diversity that makes a country club seem open minded), but this is our time to shine.  We are Miami University.

Plenty of politicians come out of MU and we have a plethora of CEOs. Take your pick!

Ridiculous. The place isn't even the top ranked public university in its own state! I've always heard, however, that its students and alums have an almost delusional sense of self-importance about where the school stands in the food chain. Thanks for proving that those rumors are true. Posted 09/19/2008 1:55 PMReply

Rumor you say?

"The 2009 U.S.News & World Report college rankings lists Miami University 26th among the top public universities in the nation, once again recognizing Miami for providing "outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success.""

Maybe you were thinking of football rankings, in which case you would be correct and I'm okay with that.

And Ohio State is 19th. Like I said, "not even the highest ranked public university in its own state."

Silly, delusional Miamian.

Yes, Ohio State is 19th. But insinuating that Miami is a bad school because it isn't ranked the best in the state is like saying Michigan State (30) is bad because it isn't the best in its state. Bottom line, you don't see the University of Miami near Miami University, period. Posted 09/20/2008 02:59 AMReply

Nobody was insinuating that Miami of Ohio is a bad school. I, however, was saying that Miami of Ohio is not the type of school whose alumni "are running the world" and to support that contention pointed out that it's not even it's own state's flagship or highest ranked public university.

I also pointed out how your post seems to support the stereotype of Miami of Ohio students having a far grander view of their school than that held by the rest of the world.

Miami has for the past 200-years been one of America's best public universities... Ohio State was an open-admission A&M school that is beginning to rise in stature due to a variety factors. I attend Ohio State for graduate school (Bucknell '06 undergraduate) and I have a lot of respect for Miami. Posted 09/22/2008 12:57 PMReply
