Last time, dear readers, I stood atop my soap box shouting nothing but praise for the upcoming 3G iPhone. Well, while I still intend to pick one up, I just spotted something even crazier on Gizmodo: the Fujitsu F706i!
Never heard of Fujitsu? I don’t blame you. They’re a Japanese cell phone company, and all their space-age technology is exclusive to that region. This sad fact sucks, because, if you weren’t aware, our cell phones generally stink something fierce.
Seriously!
Compared to the rest of the world, our phones, for the most part, are out-of-date antiquated devices. We’re lacking so many features that even their cheapest phones have. Hell, we’re not even on a 3G stand yet. My $300 phone uses EDGE and doesn’t even support video. I hate you, T-Mobile.
So what makes the F706i particularly special? Frankly, everything.
While it looks like a Razr, this bad boy is waterproof, streams television, supports video conferencing and more. Yes, with this phone, you could watch today’s season finale of Lost while taking a bath.
I said, “Wow.”
No word on how much it costs, but it doesn’t honestly matter since it’ll never see the light of day on this side of the globe. I need to seriously investigate the “unlockability” of Japanese cell phones. I would seriously contend with a Japanese OS if it meant being cutting-edge. Sadly, for you students on a summer internship income, I doubt this is a viable option.
If we have any college readers in Japan, enjoy! As for the rest of us, let's hope Steve Jobs, my dear sweet Buddah, makes the iPhone 2 capable of streaming television and being submerged in water.
