MySpace Is For The Poor And Stupid?

MySpace Is For The Poor And Stupid?

In a recent interview with BusinessWeek, Michael Wolff, the tell-all author of the Rupert Murdoch biography, had some choice words about MySpace users.

He said: I don’t think that’s true. I think it is--if you’re on MySpace now, you’re a [expletive] cretin. And you’re not only a [expletive] cretin, but you’re poor. Nobody who has beyond an 8th grade level of education is on MySpace. It is for backwards people.

But tell us what you really think Michael.

I’ll admit, while the wording is off, the “MySpace sucks! Facebook rules!” argument is not a completely invalid one. (Has anyone seen the page designs of those MySpace pages?) However, Wolff’s argument doesn’t exactly pan out.

TechCrunch analyzes the demographics of the social networking site and determines that, in fact, MySpace users are not all poor and stupid. Check out the numbers:

  • 52% of MySpace users make more than $60,000 per year
  • 23% make more than $100,000 per year
  • Only 11.6% make less than $25,000
  • 63% own homes
  • 28% are college graduates

So is Michael Wolff trying to say $60,000 a year makes you poor? If so, call me an f***ing cretin.
