Last night the two presidential candidates roasted each other at the Alfred E. Smith dinner in NYC. After a fairly contentious debate on Wednesday, you would think two candidates making fun of each other would be a bit awkward.
Actually, not at all.
Actually, it’s one of the most honest moments I’ve seen in this whole campaign.
Obama says there’s no better crowd he’d rather be “pallin’ around with,” McCain jokes about Mickey Mouse registering with ACORN. These jokes seemed much more geniuine than the actual stump speeches you hear every day. In this moment it became explicitly clear to me that McCain doesn’t actually think Obama cavorts with terrorists, and Obama doesn’t think McCain thinks that. They both just realize that it’s all stupid politics, and for one night let the rest of the world know how they really feel about the campaign. In a word, it’s ridiculous. And everyone knows it.
McCain’s speech is below, which is pretty funny also, but Obama's roast of himself, McCain and the audience is better than most Daily Show or Weekend Update reports I’ve seen recently. I knew he had a sense of humor, but damn. Watch it all the way through, you’ll be glad you did.
